Expresso Shots: Blackout Poem for Geniuses

Blackout Poems are great ways to give students the opportunity to create poems from other literature. If you'd like to do this digitally, you could use tools like Google Drawings if you have chromebooks, however if you have iPads, keynote is a great app to use.

To begin, find the text you'll be using. It could be from a text books, a famous speech, a poem. It could be some old writing from your students. We like to use verses from my favorite songs.

Now copy and paste the text to Keynote app. You can edit the font if you'd like. Once your text is prepared, look to the top right corner of the page and you'll find the plus sign. You'll find the menu denoted with the photo icon. You'll find the "Drawing" option there.

Depending on your motivation, you can identify words that you might want to display in your poem. Use the tools at the bottom of the screen to blackened the page.

Once you're finished, save your poem as an image by going to the "…" in the top right corner and choose "Export." Export as a JPEG and you're good. Place it where you'd like it to be.
